AP Language Summer Reading
Choose one of the following books to read:
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Just Mercy by Bryon Stevenson
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
Assignment as your read: annotate text for rhetorical strategies used. You may annotate in your own book or on paper. These annotation will help you on the writing assignment. There will be a writing assignment the first week of school.
Things to keep in mind as you read: What is the purpose of making this memoir read like a narrative? How does it impact the reader? What about the audience? How are the readers supposed to feel, act and do? How can a theme in the memoir represent the author's arguments they are making? Is there bias involved? Why or why is it important to recognize that? What kind of ‘social commentary’ is being provided? What kinds of arguments are the main characters making and what type of strategies are they using to make the argument? It all comes down to the author's choices and author's purposes.
Strategies:

Emotion
Credibility
Exemplification
