Computer Systems
Computer Systems is an intermediate course designed to prepare students with work-related skills and aligned certification in the information technology industry. Content provides students the opportunity to acquire knowledge in both theory and practical applications pertaining to hardware, operating systems, safe mode, command prompt, security, networking, printers, peripheral devices, laptops, mobile devices, troubleshooting, and customer service management. Upon completion of the course, proficient students will have acquired skills and knowledge to install, configure, and maintain computer systems. Students who are proficient in this course will be eligible to pursue the IT industry-standard credential, CompTIA’s A+ certification.
Topics Covered
- Set up a new computer.
- Identify system requirements when purchasing a new computer.
- Understand the technology and specifications used to describe computer components.
- Make informed choices about which device characteristics are required for your situation.
- Install or upgrade the operating system.
- Manage external devices.
- Troubleshoot common computer problems that can be resolved without replacing internal components.
- Connect to a small home network.
Expectations
- Follow all Rockvale High School policies as well as Coach Jackson's lab policies.
- Be respectful of your classmates.
- Be prepared. Be on time and try your best.
- Be proactive about obtaining and submitting makeup work.
- Most work will be completed in class. If you are diligent in class, there will be very few nights with homework. As a result, classwork should be completed in a timely manner.
Lab Policies
- Food and drink, except for water, are not allowed. Water must be in a sealable container.
- Computers are for school use only and should not be used for games, or social media.
- Do not unplug anything from the computers.
- Do not install any software onto the computers.

Grading Policy
- Grades will fall into one of two categories and calculated as listed below:
- 60% - formative (classwork, participation, short term projects)
- 40% - summative (Unit projects and tests)
